2012 was a big year for movies. We had Presidents come back to life and then he fought vampires. We finally saw an end to the Twilight trilogy (thankfully). 007 came back, but rebooted. 8bit games became cool again and some impressive real life plots. Here is my list of the Top 10 Movies of 2012! Disagree? Leave me a comment below.
1. Anna Karenina
A stunning adaption of the 19th century Tolstoy epic about the inner struggles of the Russian bourgeoisie. Keira Knightley’s Anna is devastating, gorgeous, and a little mad – and her presence is highlighted by a stoic Jude Law, for whom this is one of his best serious roles. Not going to get a lot of love from the awards committees’ this year, but this is an amazing film.
2. Lincoln
Leading contender to sweep multiple categories during Award’s season – Daniel Day Lewis portrayal of Lincoln is nothing short of remarkable. The film (intentionally or not) was released just around election season; moreover and its narrative around how well-intentioned leaders have to make moral concessions with themselves in order to get “what is right” accomplished was especially a propos.
3. Django Unchained
A spaghetti western mixed with Pulp Fiction. As visually stimulating as they come, totally and completely enjoyable for 150 minutes. If you like Tarantino at his finest, you should find yourself at your nearest cinema on its release on Christmas Day.
4. Argo
Masturbatory fantasy for us International Relations major types. Story of the dramatic and curious rescue of a group of six former embassy workers in Iran in hiding following the takeover of the embassy by revolutionaries.
5. Zero Dark Thirty
Director Kathryn Bigelow’s latest movie (following her success with The Hurt Locker) on the story of the assassination of Osama Bin Laden.
6. Moonrise Kingdom
Wes Anderson’s latest installment, the cute story of a Scout boy and his well-read girlfriend, out looking for adventure.
7. Life of Pi
Director Ang Lee’s movie adapation of Yann Martel’s high school English class favorite.
8. Skyfall
One of the best Bond movies in years. Depicts an older, injured James Bond, facing existential dilemmas of his own while England roils under the threat of an anonymous enemy who terrorizes through optic cables.
9. The Master
Philip Seymour Hoffman stars as cult leader and Joaquin Pheonix as his star-studded, drunken devotee, in this supposed story on the origins of Scientology.
10. Dark Knight Rises
While it definitely couldn’t measure up to Dark Knight, Bane’s cruelty and Hathaway’s cat were too good not to include in this list.
