6 Jams We’re Listening To

Here are 6 jams on rotation in Nobody Loves Ringo’s Ipod and worthy of your ears.

Caitlin Rose

Right now I’m in love with most everything coming out of Nashville. Nobody captures the emerging neo-country/alt-rock sound down there with quite as much grace as Caitlin Rose. She has a beautiful voice which she demonstrates on longing ballads and punchy rock jams alike.

Apache Relay

This group was brought to my attention from a buddy working impossible hours on a campaign last cycle. He was so stoked on the live show he called me at 2 a.m. on a Wednesday night to make sure I listening to Apache Relay right then and there. The Nashville band (I’m serious about how good Nashville is right now) could be best described as a fuller, more rounded out, rockier version of Mumford and Sons.

Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics

Summertime is about getting all kinds of sweaty on a dance floor somewhere. Enter Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics. The Georgia soul band brings the kind of oomph needed when your rooftop BBQ is starting to transition to a dance party as the sun goes down. Ruby and her Soulphonics toe the line recently pushed by Fitz and the Tantrums and the late Amy Winehouse. But their sound remains unique – bridging southern soul with a doo-wop vibe.

Deer Tick

This band has been a staple of my life-soundtrack since I first moved to the district four years ago. Their upcoming release – “Negativity” – is probably one of the most anticipated releases of 2013 for me. After taking a broken heart into the studio for their last album, John McCauley and his band released a drug-fueled party album, largely devoid of meaning and substance. McCauley admitted to heavily using during the writing process for the last album and has promised that Negativity will be a return to a deeper, more reflective, storytelling Deer Tick. If the album is anything like the single (sampled below), Deer Tick will further cement themselves in my Ipod rotation.

Pickwick

For the longest time Pickwick were the best kept secret in the Seattle scene. They sold out shows across the Pacific Northwest but never made it past Idaho on tour. That has changed thanks to the long awaited release of their debut album “Can’t Talk Medicine.” The high energy, tambourine-filled band put on a great live show. Their album is also can’t miss from start to finish.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band

Prez Hall have been a New Orleans staple for decades, bringing the greatest local jazz musicians together to maintain the region’s rich music history. Since Katrina they have been some of the most visible advocates for NOLA, touring the nation fundraising for their home. Over the last few years they have befriended Jim James (of My Morning Jacket fame) who encouraged them to make an album of original compositions. Preservation Hall’s new album “That’s It!” daftly honors their NOLA heritage while demonstrating what is quite obvious when you see them live, these boys can play!
