Hogo: DC’s Kitschy Rum Bar

For those tired of the “my parents pay my rent so I can live in Brooklyn to write my memoirs and run my Etsy shop” vibe from the Passenger, Hogo is a great alternative that’s right next door.

Run by the Passenger’s Tom Brown, Hogo is perfect for those who love the Passenger’s dedication to great cocktails, but are looking for something a little different. Hogo embraces some of the tiki bar décor that goes along with its menu of tropical drinks to include a giant portrait of Steve Zissou greeting you as you walk in.

Don’t let the 60’s throwback decorations fool you, this bar takes its food and cocktails very seriously. Showcasing an extensive menu of rum and tequila, Hogo is great option for those who both like a creative cocktail and a little bit of kitsch.hogo8

A favorite is the Queens Royale (El Dorado 8 Rum, Domaine de Canton, honey syrup, lime, and sparkling wine), which is both spicy and refreshing. Also on the menu are twists on several classic tiki drinks, such as the Volcano Bowl which serves 4 and is perfect for an after work happy hour.

A member of the Temporary Works Project, Hogo loans out its kitchen to a rotating schedule of chefs who put their own spin on Hogo’s rum bar theme, so hurry in before the menu changes. Currently with chefs Chris Wright and Javier Duren, Hogo’s menu skews heavily Cajun featuring small plates such as fried okra and fried tomatoes.

If you are looking for something more substantial, the best out of the current menu would have to be the pulled pork sandwich and the crawfish macaroni and cheese. The pulled pork sandwich is topped with a fresh slaw and spicy barbecue and makes a really great complement to the spicy rum cocktails ordered along side.

The crawfish macaroni and cheese didn’t skimp on the crawfish (it seemed like more crawfish than macaroni) and had a had a wonderfully spiced creole béchamel sauce.

As Temporary Work’s purpose is provide a springboard for talented chefs to find a permanent home in DC, I hope Chris Wright and Javier Duren look to continue their “Southern Diner” concept elsewhere. In the meantime, even the menu will change, the rum and tequila menu will remain with great direction from a very accomplished mixologist at the helm.

Hogo is located at 1017 7th St NW, open Tuesday through Thursday from 5pm to 1:30 am and Friday through Saturday from 5pm to 2:30am.
