Do you like food? How about Greek food? Then you need to check out Medi. A customized experience just for you. http://www.clotureclub.com/2012/11/our-review-of-medi/
Our Review of Medi
Medi
4037 Campbell Avenue
Arlington, VA 22206
Medi is your hidden gem in the Shirlington neighborhood of Arlington. The cuisine is predominately Greek with other Mediterranean influences and it is based on a “quick service” model much like Chipotle. Medi is far from fast food though. They focus on healthy and high quality ingredients with an exacting attention to detail and they have many gluten free and vegetarian menu options. Medi’s recipes are all homemade and in some cases have been passed down through generations.
Diners enjoy a customized experience. How does it work? First you choose the style of meal that suits your mood. You can have your meal in the form of a pita wrap, a salad or on top of rice. They use Fontanini pita bread out of Chicago and the rice is infused with lemon and mint. I went with the pita.
Next you choose one of several meats or balsamic grilled veggies. Medi only uses free range meats which are all marinated using a family recipe and they don’t use any oils in the meat preparation. Rather they take the time to sous-vide the meat, this cooking style entails sealing the meat in a vacuum-packed bag and slow cooking it for up to 72 hours in a water bath. The result is very tender and flavorful meat that is cooked in its own juices. I chose the spicy braised lamb, seasoned with peppers and Medi spices. The spices packed a little heat, but nothing too overwhelming. It was delicious!
After you choose your meat you can dress it with their signature toppings. For example you could have a Greek Style or the Europa Style meal. I went with the Moroccan Style, which was composed of “Medi Spicy 17 Spread”, grilled sweet peppers and onion mélange, cilantro, tomato and red onion. I was impressed away by the Medi Spicy 17 Spread. The 17 refers to the number of ingredients in the spread and it is reminiscent of a harissa but elevated to a whole new level. Some of the ingredients I could detect included Chipotle and Adobo peppers, ground coriander, honey and tandoori spice. It has an amazing spicy and slightly sweet flavor and the pepper mélange was great too. It’s made with onions and both red and green sweet peppers that are stewed in wine with golden raisins.
To accompany my delicious Moroccan style dish I ordered the innovative Gyrito. Part gyro and part taquito, it’s kind of like a crispy Greek egg roll, served atop a bed of lettuce and diced tomatoes. They take slices of gyro meet and feta cheese and roll it in a corn tortilla. It is then fried to perfection and drizzled with a balsamic glaze that gives it a little sweetness and a homemade tzatziki sauce is served with it to dip. The feta really comes through well and the Gyritos are a lot lighter than you would think. They are definitely worth trying.
Medi is a great place to have high quality, quick service Mediterranean meal at a very reasonable price. You can be in and out for under $10. They also have an interesting beer and wine selection and serve a tasty Pomegranate sangria. More Medis are on the way and they will be expanding into DC soon.
Happy Eating!

Touchdown Jesus Returns to the Big Stage
With Notre Dame, Touchdown Jesus, strutting in with a perfect record, one may have thought ‘I wonder if they will break out the green uni’s’ ‘will this west coast trip be another blowout by USC? ‘Who the hell is the QB for USC?’ Well, fortunately Coach Kelly probably incinerated the green jerseys which have been known to be a bit of a bad luck charm for the Irish. Luckily the Irish have matured and have a somewhat strong defense and a strong TE and WR core that were able to carry the team and Mighty Max just did not have the Trojan magic and showed his flaws throwing a couple that went the other way. Notre Dame simply had a USC just did not have the swagger that it use to have better game plan than USC, USC was in scramble mode after the UCLA disaster and Lane Kiffin knew putting in a redshirt freshman against the number one team in the nation was similar to holding an M80 in your hand and avoiding losing it completely. USC just did not have the swagger that it had in the Reggie Bush/Matt ‘Dance class’ Leinart and Lendale ‘Pass me the Patron’ White. Notre Dame had something that they have not had in the past 24 years, a complete team. Sure, they’ve been to three BCS games, I witnessed when they played TJ whosyourmama and Chad ‘I got no job but I got twitter’Johnson and the #5 Oregon State Beavers who shredded the Irish 41-9. They then played the Ohio State Buckeyes and lost 34-20 in the Fiesta Bowl again and then got destroyed by LSU at their home away from home at the Sugar Bowl 41-14. Needless to say they could go for the Golden Sombrero of BCS games or go 0 for 2 against SEC opponents.
I could rant and rave about the BCS and say it’s flawed, etc, etc, etc. but I would probably need at least a bottle of Jack and Coke Zero to get the engines churning. The facto of the matter is, ND went undefeated. An accomplishment only one other team in the land did but due to a bowl ban they will be watching in Columbus. They beat four ranked teams this year, two were close and two were not so close. Their potential opponent(s) Georgia and Alabama, the bread and butter of the SEC. When I think of Georgia, I remember the pounding they gave to poor Hawai’i in the Sugar Bowl a few years back by the now QB of the Lions. As for Alabama, I think of Nick ‘I will not take the Alabama job’Saban (seriously, its on youtube I can’t make that shit up). Both teams bring some firepower to the table, Alabama brings a steady attack of rushing and the top defense in the country. The Bulldogs on the other hand lost to then #9 South Carolina and squeaked out a ‘W’ against the Gators, they bring a balanced attack of rushing and passing, with their D ranked 16th. Hondo is going to go with the favorite, Alabama. For the reason that this is Alabama’s third SEC Championship game. They are 1-1, Nick Saban is going for his third National Championship with the Tide and quite frankly this is business as usual, with higher stakes and I just do not see Georgia beating the tide. Prediction will be 35- 21.
As for the National Championship, I would love to say the Irish can run the table and cap off an undefeated year and cry tears of joy and the streets would be lined gold and navy but I don’t see it happening. For the fact, ND struggled at times this year nearly losing to Pitt who lost to Youngstown State, struggling against BYU, they squeaked by Michigan who was embarrassed at Jerry World at the start of the year. Plain and simple, the SEC is bigger/stronger/faster and as hard as Coach Kelly tries to sneak some recruits under the radar, Notre Dame will put up a fight but the Tide will roll and I predict a score of 27-17.
Being from the Midwest and growing up not too far from the campus of Notre Dame, I know that it emits an aura of prestige/history/honor/tradition. Knute Rockne, Joe Montana, Joe Theisman, Mike Golic, Paul Hornung all tremendous legends but I never bought into the hype. I have played many of hockey games at the Joyce Center and have toured the campus; it is not going to be named to any list of hottest campuses across America. South Bend is a blue collar town that happens to have an extremely well known institution in the middle of it. Notre Dame joins the ranks of the New York Yankees, Duke Blue Devils, Dallas Cowboys, The Miami Heat (current era) of teams people love to hate on the flipside I do know people who love the school more than their own undergrad, I always joke and say they have more donors that did not go to the school than those who did.
In closing, whoever the Irish play I will be rooting for their opponent not for the reasons I listed above but for the fact of this story (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5734494). I won’t go into further detail other than, please read it and please keep the Sullivan family in your thoughts this holiday season.
Happy Holidays everyone!

Introducing Capitol Couple – D.C. The District of Courtship
Hello Washingtonians. I want to introduce myself as the Capitol Couple, the newest advice column contributor for Cloture Club. I have been a long time reader and fan of Cloture Club and recently approached them to write an article on dating and being a couple in D.C. As you know, the website does a great job of telling people what to do for fun or where to meet each other, but I thought Cloture Club could also provide an opportunity to give couples some advice while providing insights into dating, relationships and the wonderful environment that is Washington D.C., so here you go!
A little background about me: I am a young professional from California that moved to DC as many do to work in politics. A distinct difference I have from many young professionals in DC is that I have been in a committed relationship for the past three years with the most wonderful woman, who doesn’t labor in the political arena, but did move here to be with me after a couple of months of us doing a trans-continental long distance relationship.
Many of my DC colleagues have said when I have told them of our three year courtship, “Whoa three years?! I don’t even think I’ve held a job for longer than two.”
In a city where someone my age only has a job for about two years and then seeks another job that is more important and prestigious than the last, why shouldn’t the same be applied to dating?!?!… Since moving to Washington DC, I have come across this reaction more times than I can count. Rather than yell at them “We are in love!” and quote the Notebook, I opt for giving them an explanation that justifies why I choose to stay with my girlfriend for three great years.
Enough about me, let’s get to the inaugural column!
I was lucky enough to receive some great advice from a good friend that I want to share with you. If you want to both impress a date and get a better sense of their personality in different scenarios; take them out to multiple dates/venues within one date.
Taking them to multiple venues allows a couple of things to happen.
First, it impresses the hell out of your date or significant other. Whether you are on your first or 500th date, they will appreciate the effort you make and the thought you put into the special day for them.
And secondly, it gives your relationship a check up.
When my girlfriend moved to DC, I wanted to show her how appreciative I was of her taking the chance to move and to introduce her to the city that I have come to love. To do this, I made a strong effort of combining events that Washington DC had to offer into a fun adventure. I decided to take her on a scavenger hunt during the afternoon that took us around the city so I could show her my favorite sites.
After our afternoon scavenger hunt I took her to a sushi dinner in Chinatown. At dinner we had a few sake bombs (which was my girlfriend’s first encounter with this delightful combo of beer and sake). After our lively liquid filled dinner we went and saw a play and then grabbed some dessert. Most of these events were in the Chinatown/Gallery Place/ Penn Quarter area which made for a fun day without breaking the bank.
This fun day reaffirmed what I already knew about my girlfriend. She is a blast and very adventurous and open minded. All characteristics I love about her. But for many couples a day like this could explain why you may not be compatible.
For example: Many people especially in DC probably originally met at a bar, club, party or through work/work function. They might have seemed fun when you met and in most cases they were/are fun and are going to be great to date. But taking them on a scavenger hunt date or to multiple venues during one date will give you a chance to find unexplored compatibility or a realization that it was the alcohol or office fumes that caused you to think they were fun to hang out with the first time you met them.
Now I realize that most of you might be thinking that you are a young up and comer and you aren’t here to find the person of your dreams, but hear me out. It would be much more practical to enjoy the company of someone you actually get along with and through this type of date you get to realize what you enjoy in a person. It is better than the alternative: never figuring out what you want in another person and ending up marrying someone who you can’t stand or who is certifiably crazy.
I hope this advice is helpful and you will come with me as we explore the many wonders of Washington DC and how you can use them to your dating advantage. For our next stop we will be looking at unique gift ideas and where you can purchase them.
Happy dating!

History of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
Dear Cloture Detective,
The other weekend was Veterans Day and I was at the ceremony held at Arlington National Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknown soldier. I know the event began roughly after World War I, but I was wondering what the history behind Veterans Day was and if the same sort of ceremony existed then as it does now.Sincerely,
A Patriot
[D Patriot,
What a gorgeous day outside that was! The history behind the First Veterans Day National Ceremony is really interesting and coincides with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier as well. In 1921, two separate Congressional resolutions simultaneously honored veterans’ in the United States. One established a national holiday for the veterans and the other honored a veteran with a memorial service in the Capitol building. On October 31, 1921, Representative Andrew Volstead of Minnesota introduced House Joint Resolution 215, “to declare November 11, 1921, a legal public holiday.” On that day the House agreed by unanimous consent to the resolution. H.J. Res. 215 was brought up for consideration in the Senate by Senator Knute Nelson of Minnesota on November 2, 1921. It passed after being reported in the Senate and established Armistice Day (later Veterans’ Day) as a new National Holiday. H.J. Res. 215 was signed it by President Harding and became Public Resolution Number 26.
In addition to this remembrance, Senator James Wadsworth of New York proposed, “a concurrent resolution authorizing the Sergeant at Arms of the House and Senate to secure a wreath to be placed upon the casket of the Unknown Soldier on November 11.” The Unknown Soldier of World War I lay in state in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol on November 9, 1921 before being taken by horse drawn carriage for a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery on November 11. The ceremony was widely attended by numerous Members and Senators, as well as by President Warren G. Harding (who subsequently awarded the Medal of Honor that same day to the Unknown) and former Presidents Howard Taft and Woodrow Wilson. This Armistice Day resolution began what would continue for the unknown World War II soldier and unknown Korean War soldier, leading eventually to the construction of the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.
Later on, an Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) was approved May 13, 1938, which made the 11th of November in EACH CALENDAR YEAR a legal holiday—a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as “Armistice Day.” However, Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of various Veteran Service Organizations (VSO’s), amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting in its place the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation, signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Fiscal Cliff, Best House Cafeteria and more
Happy belated Thanksgiving, ClotureClub readers? I missed you. I have elevated myself from my post-election bender to the upgraded bender: Thanksgiving leftovers and whiskey. I think now I might move to fiscal cliff egg-nogg. (It’s egg-nogg with Everclear, tell all your friends.)
From: Mabel @ the Fry Station
Subject: What is the best House cafeteria?
If you don’t say Longworth, I’m going to s#*t in every 10th chicken finger basket.
ALRIGHT. ALRIGHT. LONGWORTH. Dirksen really is the best, though.
From: Hopeful LA
Subject: Staffing up for new membersHi Hill Staffer,
I am an LA for a member who will be departing at the end of term. I have sent my resume to every new member in my party and every single contact that I can think of. I know that the new members are receiving thousands of resumes from other displaced staffers and Hill Hopefuls. I have to ask, what are my chances? Do I have a competitive advantage because I currently am a Legislative Assistant?
You’ve been here long enough to know that most of these new members just give jobs to their campaign staffers, despite any real lack of qualification. Some will burn out.
No harm in trying, but chances aren’t that great. There’s patronage at play here.
From: Administration staffer with a hard-on
Subject: InternsHow often do those young, skimpily attired interns put out with male hill staffers? Do eligible gents on the executive side have a chance? If so, what are the new hot spots to locate available interns (now that Hawk & Dove is out of action)?
More often than they should. I don’t advise boning interns, but if you want to go meet some, I’d advise an unusual strategy: hit on them at lunch. Much less competition, they won’t expect it, and they’ll look hot to their friends. Am I judging you for wanting to get it on with interns? Yes. Find a nice girl off the hill from the midwest.
From: Candid Campaigner
Subject: Looking for a Hill JobSo my candidate lost, as expected, and hasn’t been particularly helpful with placing his staff elsewhere. I still dream of working on the Hill. How do I approach the incoming freshman?
A sore loser, you say? In politics? No…. NO WAY THIS IS POSSIBLE?!?! I’d ignore the incoming freshmen. Why? Because they have limited DC openings, and most of them will go to party loyalists and staff. And you’d be behind those with years of hill experience for the remainder of those jobs. So, ignore freshmen. Spend some time if there’s a new one from your state, but I’d write most of them off.
Keep it tuned here and to BradTraverse.com and find other openings with current members. That’s the ticket.
Enjoy the left over turkey and booze, and go Redskins! Yeah, take that WCP, I said Redskins.

Who is the better Quarterback? Andrew Luck or RG3
Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III have become well accustomed to comparison. All eyes were on both quarterbacks during the 2012 Heisman Trophy ceremony, where Luck watched as Griffin took home the coveted award. Then it was on to the 2012 NFL draft, where it was Luck’s turn to walk away with the top spot, drafted No.1 overall by the Indianapolis Colts, while Griffin was drafted No.2 by the Washington Redskins. And going in to this NFL season, there was no question that the comparison would continue, with sports writers sure to critique every move of the two quarterbacks, from the speed of their passes to the result on the scoreboard.
The scrutiny comes with good reason though, as many inside the NFL have already dubbed the 2012 quarterback class as the best yet. Luck and Griffin bring a level of athleticism and maturity to the quarterback position that the NFL has not seen before at the rookie level. At the same time, both quarterbacks have clear differences in their style of play- Luck is more of a traditional play-in-the-pocket quarterback with an impressive ability to move around aggressively and scramble for first downs, which have been a big help for the Colts. On the other hand, Griffin is clearly a running quarterback with lightening fast speed, but with a skillful throwing arm to match that has wowed fans and players alike (see story).
So when it comes to comparing these two quarterbacks, does one look strictly at individual player stats, the hype they’ve created for their organizations, or the records of their respected teams? Looking purely at stats is already a hard call – while Griffin has an impressive 101% rating with 2,193 yards and 12 touchdowns, Luck has a notably lower 77.2% rating but a whopping 2,985 yards and also 12 touchdowns, along with a slew of rookie passing records under his belt already.
As for hype, thats another close one. Griffin certainly seems to have led the hype factor in the beginning of the NFL season, with his dynamic playmaking ability and speedy “how did he just do that” maneuvers. But a stunning 30-27 win for the Colts over the Green Bay Packers during Week 5 put Luck back on everyone’s radar. And following a loss to the New York Jets, the Colts went on to have a four game win streak, while Griffin and the Redskins suffered three straight losses.
But on any given Sunday things can change and Week 11 proved it. Following a much needed bye week, having blamed himself for the Redskins poor play, Griffin seemed refreshingly on point in the Redskins 31-6 win over the much troubled Philadelphia Eagles. The game was a high point for Griffin who completed 14 of 15 passes, throwing four touchdown passes against zero interceptions. Meanwhile, Luck was getting a dose of reality handed to him by Tom Brady and the Patriots, who beat the Colts 59-24 that same day.
If we base the comparison of Luck and Griffin solely on their team, then clearly Luck is out in front. The Colts are currently 6-4 and could still very well make a wildcard playoff spot, but need to win at least one of two scheduled games against the red hot Houston Texans.
As for the Redskins, a 4-6 record in the NFC East is going to make any playoff birth an uphill battle for a team that is plagued by injury and is relying on second string receivers, along with a less than perfect defense. Griffin, as good as he is, will not be able to do it all on his own, and needs receivers than can hold on to the ball (though that is likely not happening until next season).
So is Luck the better quarterback given his team is still in the hunt for a playoff spot, or does Griffin’s talent alone in spite of his team’ situation make him the better quarterback?
Andrew Luck or RG3

Our Review of The Strange Undoing Prudencia Hart
Big Scotch, Bagpipes, and Debauchery: Just Another Midwinter’s Eve
“The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart” (that’s “pru-DEN-see-a,” not “pru-DEN-shuh,” for us Yanks) is described by its Shakespeare Theatre Company promotional literature as a “dreamlike journey of self discovery, magical moments, devilish encounters, and wittily wild karaoke.” If that sounds like your standard-issue weekend of sex, alcohol, and rock’n’roll, you’d be mistaken: it’s much better.
Here are a few more things that “TSUOPH” is: a story-within-a-story set within academia employing the literary form it parodies (honors?); an excuse to test Washington’s theatergoing public’s tolerance of Scottish folk music and suggestiveness (there’s plenty of both); a loose reproduction of minstrel style (writer David Greig delights in rhyming such phrases as “tit under bum/quod erat demonstrandum” and the frighteningly memorable “my idea of hell—a/middle aged man singing a capella”); and, most impressively, a modern interpretation of the traditional Scottish folk ballad form, incorporating everything from commentary on contemporary mores (Kylie Minogue is mentioned repeatedly, not to her advantage) to good staunch Scottish Calvinism (“That’s the thing about evil—you don’t choose it, it chooses you”).
At first glance, the Bier Baron Tavern seems an odd choice of venue; however, both the setting and the performance style help make the audience part of the story as it unfolds around them. Fittingly for a folk ballad, the slender cast encourages audience participation (or, in more than one case last Saturday, forces it) and, perhaps aided by the adult beverages available for purchase during the performance, enthusiastic participation is what they receive. With merely a small stage as home base for their musical instruments (other props are scattered around the pub), the actors break free and perform in what the audience probably assumed was its personal space, allowing for direct engagement and resulting in a high energy performance.
“The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart” manages to incorporate lively Scottish beats, hauntingly beautiful ballads, and modern pop karaoke in a manner that actually works. If you’re looking for a performance engendering raucous laughter, one that pleases both ladies enamored of Scottish accents and gentlemen intent on drinking beer, then this is the production for you.

Synchronicity – A Gift If You Take It
There is not a week that passes that I am not asked why I believe in synchronicity. C.G. Jung defines it as “a meaningful coincidence of two or more events where something other than the probability of chance is involved.” I wholeheartedly subscribe to this theory because I have personally witnessed it in action in my personal life, and I have seen it play out on numerous occasions with my clients, family, and friends.
How many times has the exact right person shown up in your life at the exact right time to help? How often have you been amazed at the coincidence or had the feeling that the strangest thing happened that could not have been predicted which helps you on your journey? Some would say that these events are coincidences, but I challenge those to consider another possibility: synchronicity.
In my mentoring practice, I have seen it occur when a client decides to move out of their comfort zone. During this period, they are more open to experience vulnerability and take the risk to grow and become “whole” (these steps are neither successes or failures – they are merely steps). To venture in unfamiliar space, they are facing fears of uncertainty, losing security and most certainly giving up a great deal of control. They have the blind trust that what they are doing is right and the faith that they will succeed.
If they are on their right path, synchronicity enters their life.
If they are on their right path, synchronicity enters their life. They may get a phone call from someone they had forgotten; a stranger will appear to help; what they thought was lost is found. All of these “accidents” are for one purpose: to help them proceed on their mission. Synchronicity is a gift from outside ourselves that for the most part we don’t understand. We live in a culture of reason, skeptics, and control and when something happens outside of that control and logic we try to fit it in a box of what we know or label it as ironic.
In 2000, I was trying to deal with my impending divorce. I wasn’t dealing with it well and a close friend suggested that I get away to a place where I could lose control and let go. A few days later I decided to go to Santa Fe, New Mexico, with no itinerary and only a place to stay. Each day I awoke, pointed the car in a direction, and drove until I got lost. That week if I could dream it, it happened! Events happened that I could not explain: I felt totally free with the universe instead of trying to control it. Because I was open and willing to take those steps outside my comfort zone, I received the very things I needed to move on with my life.
One of the treasures I brought back from New Mexico was a Zuni wolf fetish (a gift from the Zuni Indians that was sacred and therefore as a gift I considered special) One month after the trip, I was sitting with a friend at Bistro Bis showing her that Zuni wolf fetish and within a minute, a Native American woman approached our table and immediately started rubbing the stone wolf! My friend remarked what a coincidence that she was there at that exact time. The woman without pause said that in her native language there is no translation for “coincidences” because there are no accidents. Again, synchronicity!
A wise man once asked me the following question, “What if when you die you were placed in a dark room and when the light came on, you were in front of a mirror? The image in the mirror was the person you could have become in life if only you would have taken the invitations given to you and accepted the help from the people presented to you by the universe.” I believe that synchronicity has a great deal to do with these invitations and it comes when we are on or close to our right path and willing to have enough faith and hope to move outside our comfort zone to reach our destiny. That’s why I believe in synchronicity and my hope is that my clients will grasp the concept.
