Les Misérables Movie Review

Cloture Club recently attended a screening of “Les Misérables” in DC. The formula for Broadway Musicals to Movies hasn’t always been easy (See Chicago) but for Les Misérables the adaption to the large screen was mesmorizing.

Based on the 1862 novel by Victor Hugo, director Tom Hooper (“The Kings Speech”) took a gamble and had done something no other director has done before. He made his actors sing – LIVE! Performances like Anne Hathaway’s (Fantine) of “I Dreamed a Dream,” Samantha Barks’s (Eponine) of “On My Own,” and many of Hugh Jackman’s songs as Jean Valjean seem real — a more raw, real and natural tone.

Russell Crowe who plays as Javert, the parole officer who spends his life tracking down Jean Valjean, doesn’t do as well as his fellow actors in the vocal category. Some scenes require a high note which he couldn’t deliver. Little known fact, Mr. Crowe was actually in a band.

The movie is a large cat-and-mouse chase once Jean Valjean escapes from parole. Previously a thief, Valjean learns the meaning of compassion and love from a priest. He’s set on a course to do right by helping others who can’t help themselves. Cue Anne Hathaway’s character, Fantine. A single mother working hard at the local factory, but quickly gets fired from work because she has a illegitimate daughter, Cosette. Giving up her dignity, she turns to prostitution. Before her death, the compassionate Valjean promises to look after her daughter.

Les Miserables - Hugh Jackman Anne Hathaway

The promise.

Sacha Baron Cohen (“Borat” and “The Dictator.”) and Helena Bonham Carter (“Fight Club”) entertainingly broke up the dramatic story with humor. Together they play the crooked innkeepers, Thénardier and his wife, and abusive guardians of Cosette. Valjean pays a large sum for the right to be the father of Cosette.

Fast forward 9 years, the french revolution is brewing in the majestic Paris. Young Cosette has grown up and falls quickly in love with Marius (Eddie Redmayne), a local rebellion leader. Marius uses his friend Éponine as a go-between and we learn of a love triangle between the 3.

The revolution becomes a cinematic battle. As we suspected, the predictable result of young militia versus a trained army.

While I’ve never seen the original Broadway musical or read the book, there were few times that I felt left behind. The story jumps quickly between musical scores. Leaving me with questions. Getting past that, I enjoyed the overall performance and would gladly recommend it. If you are a fan of musicals, and especially the “Les Mis” musical, this movie will not disappoint.

The President and First Lady Holiday Greetings

In this week’s address, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, and thank our brave troops and their families for their service. The President and First Lady ask the American people to visit JoiningForces.gov to find ways to honor and support our veterans and military families, and say that we must all come together, as we always do, to care for each other during this holiday season.

The Wheeler Brothers at Hamilton Live

As I entered The Hamilton Live to see The Wheeler Brothers, I came to the event with an open heart and mind unfamiliar with the band. Doing research using various web tools prior to the show I learned that this five-piece quintet consisting of three brothers (Nolan, Danny, and Tyler Wheeler) and two friends (Danny Matthews and A.J. Molyneauex) from Austin, Texas have been playing together since high school. Their musical vision consists of an eclectic mixture of Country and Rock & roll. Their songs tell stories of life’s lessons where they use a multitude of instruments that range from a lap steel to a xylophone. As I left the venue after the show I came to this conclusion: The Wheeler Brothers is one song away from a musical breakthrough, but I am not sure their newest tracks will afford them such success.

As a former performer, I am cognizant of the fact that there are a multitude of factors that go into performing live sets, but song selection and placement proves to be the foundation of each gig. The anticipation of the first song cannot be stressed more when setting the pace of the entire gig. Unfortunately, The Wheeler Brothers first song provided a flat start and it wasn’t until the drums kicked in that the crowd got into it. The next piece didn’t do the group much justice as the drums this time actually drowned out the rest of the instruments. It wasn’t until their third number that the band started to find their stride, but this sentiment was short-lived as their next song, “Heather”, brought me back into a state of confusion. This roller coaster continued throughout the show where the very moment I wanted to get up and dance I became floored by the next piece. All in all, the fluidity of the set provided mixed emotions.

The musical execution does suggest The Wheeler Brothers are extremely talented and are well trained in their respective instruments. One thing that was very obvious was that one could tell which songs were new and which were older based on their stage presence and confidence. While the newer drew mixed emotions, positive vibes were unanimous with the older hits that brought them much success. With the clever use of the xylophone and the child-like manner of the tempo, “Ghost in the Valley” pleasantly provided me an image of going to the circus. “Home for the Holidays” was by far their most impressive song in my ears as well as eyes. The fact that the group seamlessly knocked this out of the park wasn’t what struck an emotional chord for me. The fact that the group’s stage presence escalated gave the suggestion that they knew they were in the zone and that was what had me convinced they have what it takes to make it to the next level. The perfect blend of instruments and vocals created a melody that took me out of the bustling city and into the comfortable suburbs of the lone star state where the only lights that come on are on Friday night (i.e.. high school football). As a huge Redskins fan, such an emotionally sentimental voyage had definitely been a venerable accomplishment and I give strong praise to The Wheeler Brothers on this piece.

There is no denying the talent of The Wheeler Brothers. They have the ability to play multiple instruments effectively and they bring a unique vibe with their mix of a number of musical genres. If they can find more direction and hone in on their newer pieces to provide the same rocked-out energy of their older pieces, then the sky is the limit. I have the upmost confidence that they will definitely flourish, and I do look forward to hearing more from The Wheeler

Brothers.

Jack Reacher Movie Review

Based on the book, Killing Floor by Lee Child, the movie starts with a sniper setting up a rifle in a car garage across from the Pirates stadium in Pittsburgh. The disturbing scene continues as we watch through the lense of sniper’s scope as he eliminates victims seemingly at random.

The release of the movie is unfortunately poorly timed due to the tragic events in Newtown CT, but as a moviegoer who had some knowledge of the original story, I was not offended or put off by the scene. But I can see how some others might be a little shaken by reality so closely emulating a fictional movie. Before I begin this review, I want the families of the victims of the shootings in Newton CT to know that the hearts and prayers of Cloture Club, its contributors and followers is with them in their time of need.

This opening scene sets a crisis into motion as the police arrest, James Barr a war veteran with a strange past. As the moviegoer you know the sniper is not James Barr but instead an unknown character until the plot thickens. Right from the beginning we’re put into a detective game of who done it, a sort of moviegoer game of Clue.

Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) plays a retired military police investigator turned drifter. Seeing the incident on TV, he heads to Pittsburgh. With Reacher’s surprised arrival, we are introduced to Barr’s defense lawyer, Helen (Rosamund Pike), who also happens to be the daughter to the prosecuting District Attorney. With some coaxing, Reacher ultimately decides to get involved with the case and our mystery starts to unfold.

Our movie villain is Zek (Werner Herzog). As a Russian Mobster, he is trying to control the concrete construction in multiple cities throughout the world. Zek’s psychopathy is shown immediately in a memorable scene where he tells a man that he will spare his life only if he will eat all the fingers on one hand. Yes, eat your fingers! While the scene was suppose to define the character, I think the audience chuckled at Zek’s request.

Jack Reacher - Tom Cruise and Robert Duvall

Robert Duvall comes in late in the movie and ultimately plays Reacher’s side kick. Duvall adds humor and levity into the story and gives the viewer a comic break from the action and drama. They ultimately band together to take on Zek, the sniper, and the Russian mob.

In a similar modern western-esque plot, this movie was enjoyable and good succeeds against evil. I can’t say Tom Cruise nails the character of Jack Reacher because of my familiarity with the novels. He comes off as a Clint Eastwood hero type as he wants to do the right thing for the right reasons but from the trailers, I was expecting a Mission Impossible action flick and from the book I was expecting a more physically imposing actor to play the main character of Jack Reacher.

This film was more like Cruise rewriting his role in past movies like the The Firm in the sense that he cleans up evil. I enjoyed and appreciated the way the movie was shot and the action was real and practical. They kept the extreme CGI explosions at bay and the car chases believable.

If you like the lawyer thriller movies with physical combat, then you’ll enjoy this flick.

We hope you took the opportunity and attended the screening earlier this week. There were promotion screening tickets last week through our website and Paramount/Allied. Make sure to continue to visit as there will be more opportunities!

Actual and Really Dumb Laws on the Books

So, Tybee Island is a small barrier island off the coast of Georgia that is about 20 min from my front door. To my surprise my local newspaper ran a headline yesterday that read, “ Tybee Island legalizes drinking on beach, sidewalks” Wait, what? As I recall the first time I ever went to that beach I had a few drinks as I took in some rays. In fact the last time I was there I also had some drinks. Come to think of it EVERYTIME I went there I had some drinks. Heck, I have had drinks on that beach with fellow Cloture Clubbers. I just always thought it was legal to drink on my beach. I wasn’t the only one who thought that. The City of Tybee Island admitted that it never enforced the law and that it was finally time to just do away with it. That got me thinking, what laws are out there that need to be taken off the books. I really am sticking to just state and local laws. I mean you readers are the ones who write Federal law so you already know what’s on those books (and by you I mean staffer, lobbyists, trade associations, oh yea and sometimes elected officials).

If a reader out there knows any of these to be blatantly wrong please tell us in the comments but you must replace the wrong law with a crazy law! So here’s a list some really dumb laws that are actually crazy, great and just plain sad.

In Athens-Clarke, GA if you want to read a book to folks in public it is illegal to do so after 2:45AM. Keep in mind that the University of Georgia is in this city. So yes the city where the state’s largest public institution of education is has banned publicly reading books. Source: Stupidlaws.com.

South Carolina, Oh Sweet Caroline, in 1976 you made it illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to play a pinball machine. I really don’t have to say anything snarky here. I mean its South Carolina.

Missouri, apparently someone there read Water for Elephants because it is illegal in the City Of Natchez to provide beer or other intoxicants to elephants. Source: Crazy-Laws.com

Those crazy campers in the Slim Jim commercials better watch out. The State of Washington has the Undiscovered Species Protection Act which covers “Bigfoot, Sasquatch, an ape-like creature or a subspecies of Homo Sapiens.” from any type of harassment. Source: alternativeprime.hubpages.com

St. Patrick’s day just got a whole lot easier for cab drivers in Chicago. There is a new law in Illinois that makes it a $50 fine for puking in a taxi. Chicagoist.com

These are just a few. There are tons of crazy laws still on the books. If any of you are looking for a great project try getting some of these erased.

DC Ska Legends, The Pietasters, Release “Oolooloo” on Vinyl

Fans, bands and musicians from all around Washington gathered last Tuesday night at The Pug on H Street to celebrate the vinyl release of The Pietasters’ 1995 hit CD “Oolooloo” and raise money to support the family of a local musician.

“It was fun to play one of their great albums on vinyl,” says Tony T., proprietor of The Pug, an iconic DC watering hole that boasts an impressive collection of ska and punk album covers on its walls and often plays ska music. Oolooloo includes The Pietasters’ biggest hit “Maggie Mae,” a touching ode to a local waitress who “pours our beer and cleans our mess,” one of many songs on the album that uses DC as a backdrop.

The Pug event also raised money to help the family of DC hardcore band Iron Cross bassist Dmitri Medvedev to get his motorcycle out of insurance impound and returned to his family. Dmitri was killed in September while riding the motorcycle on Route 50 in Virginia.

"Tony T.of The Pug pours our beer and cleans our mess while Oolooloo spins"

“Tony T.of The Pug pours our beer and cleans our mess while Oolooloo spins”

The Pietasters are not strictly a ska band, having been tapped by the late James Brown to perform as the Godfather of Soul’s backing band. The soul feel of The Pietasters is evident on Oolooloo on songs such as “Can I Change My Mind,” which features the traditional ska guitar “skank” – a quick, clipped upstroke on the strings on the second and fourth beats – but also a long organ intro, soaring horns and powerful vocals that could be straight from a Motown record.

“We’re proud of the record,” says Stephen Jackson, lead singer and principal songwriter for The Pietasters since their 1990 debut. The long play vinyl version of Ooolooloo came about thanks to two record companies who created a Kickstarter fundraising campaign called the “3rd Wave Ska Preservation Society Vinyl Reissue Campaign.”

“It’s a great album and the cover looks awesome in the bigger format,” says Cameron Seip, trumpet player for local ska band Free Lobster Buffet. “We do a cover of “Freak Show’ and crowds love it. We could play any song from that album, they’re all fabulous.”

Keith Duncan is a typically devoted fan of The Pietasters. Duncan is a musician himself, playing trombone for The Shifters and is also the founder of BlueBeat DC through which he organizes monthly ska shows.

“True story: in 1995, my girlfriend told me I had to stop listening to Oolooloo because it was all I ever listened to in the car – so I dumped her,” says Duncan. “Listening to Oolooloo on record confirms my suspicion all along, that I made the right choice.”

The Pug’s Tony T. says the event was a “warm up” for a planned fundraiser at The Pug in March to benefit a scholarship fund set up in honor of original Pietasters bassist Todd Eckhardt who died in 2001. The funds raised at that event will benefit the Duke Ellington School for Performing Arts.

“At the end of the day it was a few Pug regulars helping out a few other Pug regulars,” says Tony T.

Ska music is more than just reggae played by a punk band. Ska began in 1960’s Jamaica as a melding of Jamaican calypso and American Motown. The style faded in popularity as ska musicians like Toots Hibbert and Bob Marley shifted to reggae in the early 1970′s.

A second wave of ska emerged in England in the late 1970′s and early 1980′s spawning The Specials, The English Beat and Bad Manners among others. This second wave was also called Two Tone ska after The Specials’ founder Jerry Dammers’ record label with its distinctive black and white checkered logo emphasizing the racial inclusiveness of the music. Two Tone ska also influenced many other bands of the day like The Clash who adopted ska elements in their music.

The third wave of ska music emerged in the early 1990′s largely in Southern California and enjoyed brief mainstream popularity with groups like Reel Big Fish, Goldfinger and No Doubt. Ska now enjoys “cult” status through die-hard fans, all of whom vacillate between denouncing the death of ska and claiming we are mere days from the apocryphal fourth wave.

Our Review of Boqueria Tapas Bar and Restaurant

Boqueria Tapas Bar and Restaurant

1837 M ST NW Washington dc 20036

Website | Twitter | Facebook

Boqueria Restaurant was inspired by the Spanish tapas bars from Spain, and they are serving up some of the best tapas in DC. The Chef was imported from Barcelona and he puts a heavy emphasis on obtaining the freshest ingredients available. “Farmer Bob” (I’m not making this up J) of Leedstown Farm in Westmoreland, VA provides beautiful and affordable fruits and vegetables to Boqueria. Some of the more exotic vegetables include purple cauliflower and Tuscan kale.

The first tapas we tried was the Pan con Tomate. The Chef grilled thick slices of white bread until they developed a slight char. Fresh tomatoes were then rubbed across the toasted bread leaving a nice slather of the tomato’s pulp with fresh garlic and olive oil to accent the dish. This is a typical dish of Catalonia and it had a simple and rustic charm to it.

Tomato Bread

One of my favorite tapas was the Pimientos de Padron. It was a simple dish of blistered shishito peppers that were flashed fried and studded with big flake of coarse sea salt. The dish is a little bit like a game of “spicy roulette”. These Japanese peppers are earthy and in general not spicy, but watch out, 1 in every 8 or so has a lot of spice! This dish pairs great with one of Boqueries many sangrias.

Shishito Peppers

Like all respectable Spanish Restaurants, Boqueria takes charcuterie seriously. Ten cheeses were on the menu that night and the cheeses were served with bread, grapes, raisins and an assortment of olives. We had a Rosemary Manchego which is a sheep’s milk cheese that is hard and nutty. The rosemary gave it a nice herbal note on the palate. My personal favorite cheese was the Monte Enebro, a goat’s milk cheese that is soft and earthy (aged 2-3 months in ash). It was very creamy and quite delicious.

Boqueria Cheese

Next they brought out the Pintxos Morunous. These skewers of Colorado lamb were cooked to a perfect medium rare on the inside with a nice charred crust on the outside. A bright and citrusy salsa verde coated the top of the skewers which created a vivid explosion of flavor. A word of caution though, this is a dish for garlic lovers.

Lamb

Can a Spanish meal be complete without paella? Not in my book! We drove the meal home with the Paella de Mariscos. Plump pieces of monkfish, squid, shrimp, clams and mussels were nestled in the bed of saffron rice. A drizzle of their pungent and garlicky salsa verde ringed the dish. Boqueria’s paella is prepared using a technique that leaves an authentic crust or soccarat on the bottom. This is achieved by cooking the rice in the same browned oils that the seafood is cooked in. The result is a wonderful rich flavor and a crunchy texture. They also use Bomba Rice, which absorbs more than conventional rice and makes the dish more flavorful.

Squid

Their signature dessert is the Churros con Chocolate. Traditional fried dough sprinkled with cinnamon accompanied with hot chocolate.

Churro

I forsee many return visits to Boqueria in my future. It is versatile spot where you can pop in for a quick bite at happy hour, or have a long sumptuous meal. If you have a craving for the delicious flavors of Spain you should give them a try.

Happy eating!

-Shawn Keeley
