DC’s newest food delivery, ScratchDC

ScratchDC reached out to Cloture Club about their dinner delivery business and I was thrilled to accept a delivery and review it. ScratchDC is a new (to me) concept, it’s not takeout and it’s not a grocery delivery service–instead, they deliver everything you need to make a dinner for 2, and their dinners for 2 usually mean there is enough leftovers for the next day’s lunch. Not only are the ingredients at your fingertips, they are already sliced or diced (so you don’t have to try to decipher a recipe’s idea of a rough chop versus finely chopped) in measured portions and really specific directions. ScratchDC posts their menus every week, with one option per day, and you can order online for delivery between 3-8pm and they will even drop it off at your office (they also deliver to Arlington and Alexandria).

Our trial meal was Asian Chicken Lettuce Wraps–something I love but never make because all of the recipes I’ve seen involve a lot of ingredients and a lot of prep work for the onions, garlic, ginger, sauces, etc..and I’m a pretty lazy cook. However, with no prep work, the meal was done in about 10 minutes–ground chicken cooks very quickly!

One of ScratchDC’s claims on their website is how easy their meals are to cook even in a college student’s poorly equipped kitchen. I found that to be true, except for the fact that one of the sauces was supposed to be heated up in the microwave, which I don’t have in my small kitchen. Oh well, we threw the sauce in, unmicrowaved and thus not combined and crossed our fingers. The lettuce wraps were delicious–my only complaint is that I like my meals to have more than one component in order to feel like a full dinner. But looking at Scratch’s offerings, they have many meals (such as this Thursday’s dinner: Salmon with green beans and a potato medley) that include sides. Even though the lettuce wraps didn’t have a side, the dish was plentiful and we had enough leftover for dinner the next night.

For those of you that are busy and on the go, the recipes are quick and easy, and require very little other than literacy skills and the ability to follow directions. But most importantly to me, they are healthy (unlike most other takeout or delivery options) and they taste great! I appreciate that ScratchDC sources their ingredients from organic farms and local suppliers so you are getting high quality food. The meals range from roughly $25-$35, which is certainly less expensive than dinner out in DC for two. I recommend you try a ScratchDC meal, it may even inspire you to get to the grocery store more often to recreate some of your favorites!
