Playball
Friday, Oct. 12, 8:30 p.m.
Nationals Park
Thanks to Jayson Werth’s walk-off home run last night, the Nationals will face the St. Louis Cardinals for game five of the post-season playoff series. Tickets may be hard to come by at Nats Park, but there are plenty of great bars in the city to sport your red and catch the game: 51st State Tavern, District 2 Bar and Grille, Molly Malone’s, Redline Pub, Ventnor Sports Café, Hill Country BBQ, and Iron Horse Taproom.
Oktoberfest in the City
Saturday, Oct. 13, Noon – 5 p.m.
The Yards Park
Third and Water Streets, SE
$25 – $50 ($5 donation to get you in the door, plus drink and food tickets)
150 craft beers to tantalize your taste buds, good food, live music and more. If this sounds like the perfect way to spend your weekend, then head on over to Yards Park for Snallygaster. Named for the fearsome and mythical dragon-like creature said to have terrorized the region at the turn of the century, this craft beer festival will delight the beer enthusiast in you. Expect the best in Oktoberfest beers – German style, autumn seasonal, with international rarities. Also prepare for some of the best food D.C. has to offer from Rustico, ChurchKey, Birch & Barley, plus sweets from Buzz Bakery and Dolcezza. You’ll also be treated to live music, corn hole, bocce, and a kid-friendly area. Autumn fun for the whole family!
D.C. Blues Battle of the Bands
Saturday, Oct. 13, 7 p.m.
American Legion Post 268
11225 Fern St.
Wheaton, MD
$13 in advance, $15 at the door
If you’re a blues fan, this is the event for you. Head on up to Maryland for the annual D.C. Blues Society Battle of the Bands. You’ll be treated to a mix of well known songs and originals from up-and-coming blues bands that are competing for a spot at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis next year.
Fun on the Farm
Saturdays and Sundays, 10 a.m. – 10:30 p.m.
Summers Farm
5614 Butterfly Lane
Frederick, MD
$10 for adults, $6 for seniors, free for kids 2 and under
One of my favorite fall activities is getting lost in a corn maze, and since there are only 25 days until the election, it shouldn’t surprise you that even our corn mazes can’t escape the grips of the election. If you head out to Summers Farm in Frederick, MD, kids of all ages can navigate through rows of corn stalks that make up an image of both candidates holding the American flag.
French Underground
Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12 & 13, 8 p.m. – 1 a.m.
Embassy of France
4101 Reservoir Rd. NW
$20 in advance, $25 at the door, $35 for both nights
Maybe it’s because I’m half French, but the French Embassy has some of the best events in D.C. This weekend take advantage of this and head on over to the House of France for two nights of music, art, short films, French cuisine and beer.
POTUS Among Us
Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12 and 13, 8 p.m.
Washington Improv Theater
1835 14th St. NW
$15 – $30
After last night’s Vice Presidential debate, you might be ready to hit snooze until November 6. But spend the evening with five new candidates vying for the presidency in Washington Improv Theater’s POTUS Among Us, and you might just perk up a bit. The candidates will let theatergoers decide which issues are the most important, which contenders make the primary, and in the end which candidate wins the whole shebang. Prepare for shenanigans and some creative improve that will make Joe Biden jealous.
