Recently we sent Taylor, a fan from our facebook page, to a screening of The Perks of Being a Wallflower in DC. Here is her review:
The Perks of Being a Wallflower blew my mind… in an overwhelmingly good way. The indie music obsession, the getting high at parties, the unrequited love and the feelings of teen-angst really pulled me in. Maybe it was because I knew those feelings; I have felt the twinge of being an awkward human at that age. (Who hasn’t?)
I really think the genius of this movie comes from the vulnerability of Charlie, the main character, played by Logan Lerman. Sure, Emma Watson is a babe who shines in a role that isn’t Hermoine, but Lerman is the real star. He opens up to his friends in a way that makes him transcendent of the typical high school hierarchy.
Lerman may get bullied in the movie once or twice, but its not the incessant bullying so many other teen coming of age stories portray. Lerman’s character truly belongs in their “Island of Misfit Toys” friend group that takes him in as one of their own. He plays the socially awkward, mentally unstable kid in such an endearing way that I wanted to take him to a party and introduce him to all my friends. There are moments of sadness in the movie, sure. But there are also moments of victory so big that its worth wading through the sad and complicated emotions to land on the other side of this great film.
Overall this movie is heartbreakingly wonderful and I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. Then again, I am a sucker for troubled youth and indie music.
