Member of the Week: Jon Tester

Senator Jon Tester

Representing Montana

Website | Twitter | Facebook

Although recent polls give Republican candidate Denny Rehberg a slight edge over Jon Tester, one thing is certain. Tester is no stranger to close races, and certainly isn’t your typical senator. That’s why we’ve put the spotlight on the farmer from Montana as our Member of the Week.

Tester was born in Havre, Montana on August 21, 1956. He grew up on his parents’ farm, and has never lived more than two hours away from it. When he was nine, he tragically lost three fingers in a meat grinder accident, which we assume is not an uncommon injury in Montana. In 1978, he graduated from The University of Great Falls with a B.S. in music.

After graduating, Tester worked as a music teacher for two years before returning to his family’s farm, which he and his wife still operate today. In the 1980s, they switched from conventional to organic farming, and grow wheat, barley, peas, buckwheat, alfalfa, millet, and lentils.

Tester’s political career began in 1998, when he ran for Montana State Senate. He was elected minority whip for the 2001 session before winning reelection with 71% of the vote in 2002. In 2005, he was elected president of the Montana State Senate. With his election as president, Montana democrats held a majority in the state senate for the first time in nearly a decade. Term limits prevented him from running a third time.

In 2005, he announced his candidacy for U.S. Senate, and in 2006 won the Democratic primary election by more than 25 percentage points. His victory, along with Jim Webb’s of Virginia, was the two closest and last-decided senate races of 2006.

As a senator, he has been assigned to five different committees over the course of his tenure. Tester has been described as “your grandfather’s democrat”—he is pro-gun, anti-big business, and truly devoted to his constituency. Tester has been known to butcher and bring his own meat with him to Washington, and cites Pearl Jam as his favorite band, because they “promote many liberal causes.” As one of the races that may shift the power balance in the US Senate, everyone will be watching this race.

Lady K Street – Marijuana and What To do for 7 Weeks

Lady K is a lobbyist on K Street, and here to answer your questions. Have one for her? Use our contact form!

With Congress leaving for seven weeks, what a lobbyist going to do until after the election?

The next few weeks are eerily quiet on K Street. For those who aren’t stressed with the prospect of bringing in new business, working at a firm right now is like being in the office when your boss is out of town. You can duck out a little early, take a lunch/nap on your office roof, and feel somewhat less guilty when a VP catches you on Twitter (it’s for work purposes, I swear). But for those of us watching the purse strings, a lack of business can be brutal.

Clients are hesitant to invest in any significant lobbying campaigns until we know who’s going to lead the free world for the next four years. Who wants to play chicken with budgets when you know you’ll need to spend more in a few months? That being said, many firms are contractually obliged to spend a certain amount of funds before the calendar year ends. So when Congress enters a lame duck session this November, work will pick up substantially. It’s kind of nice having that tiny October break, don’t you think?

Lady K, There is a large amount of alcohol on K Street, how about marijuana, mary jane, pot, cannabis, weed…you get the idea?

Ahh, it was the winter of 2010. A new dusting of snow covered the ground, it was so cold even the dancers at Camelot were wearing jackets, and I found myself at a house party up in Columbia Heights full of Hill staffers from the Midwest. A few others there worked at the White House, and when they started talking about smoking — while some dude played acoustic guitar for a barely-awake girl still wearing her staffer badge — I couldn’t help but ask, “Don’t you guys have to get a security clearance?” They laughed. I felt like an idiot.

I don’t smoke, but of course there are folks that do on and off K Street. It’s more of a solitary thing: there aren’t work-sponsored hash parties like there are happy hours. To each his or her own.

You know who tends to get high more often, though? Journalists. It makes you wonder how many brilliant investigations were conducted because someone smoked a joint or two and said, “Dudddde, let’s sneak into a Romney fundraiser with a video camera.”

What would you say are the Lobbyist Dens… you know the bars where lobbyist go to be with just other lobbyists?

“Lobbyist Dens”? I love it. DC is not The Godfather. If you want a dark enclave with strong martinis (are there any other kind?) and posh overstuffed lounge chairs, go to Russia House or Eighteenth Street Lounge. But don’t expect lobbyists wearing with prominently displayed nametags to be jumping out from corners. We’re a little classier that that.

Much like sharks will eventually eat one another if left in close contact for too long, lobbyists don’t always like hanging out with other lobbyists. You know how in Mad Men, Don Draper always breaks out in a sweat when he sees an ad guy from a rival firm start bragging about some big campaign? We’re the same way. It’s because we don’t want to see our competitors, especially in a booze-fueled situation. Also, we generally don’t want others to know our footprints.

If we do want to get together with folks for a business purpose, it’s usually somewhere close to the Hill: Bullfeathers for drinks; Charlie Palmer’s, Fiola or Hunan Dynasty for dinner. Hotel bars also work well, since often times we’ll do fly-ins or entertain clients from out of town. And of course, we spend lots of time at company happy hours and dinners, but that’s more specific to each firm. Personally, the $12 martinis get old quickly, even if you’re in a mysterious dark room with fancy couches. When I’m not at work, having a Stella on the roof of Marvin is much better than any dimly lit den could ever be.

Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference Wrap-Up

This year’s Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative conference was steeped in the business of examining the political impact of the legislative process in the black community. However this year’s conference called attention to new voting rights laws passed since the 2010 election. The conferences National Town Hall meeting and the First Lady’s speech at the Phoenix Awards dinner held Saturday night addressed the significance of these laws.

Michelle Obama - Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference

In her keynote address Saturday night, the First Lady told the audience that no one should feel uncomfortable in the voting booth and that this issue of voting rights is the country’s most momentous civil rights issue of our day. “This is the movement of our era — protecting that fundamental right not just for this election, but for the next generation and generations to come. Because in the end, it’s not just about who wins, or who loses, or who we vote for on Election Day. It’s about who we are as Americans. It’s about the democracy we want to leave for our kids and grand kids”, she said

In addition, the Foundation distributed a voter guide toolkit on flash drives. These drives included information on voter registration the identification laws in each state and the latest developments regarding voter identification legislation.

One of the highlights of the conference this year was a panel hosted at the George Washington University law school and was hosted by Michael Hardaway & Ifeoma Ike the team behind Stars for Trayvon. The panel of leaders and celebrities included Dr. Michael Eric Dyson and an address by Congressman Danny Davis. The panel discussed social issues of the past year through the black man’s perspective and highlighted the importance of mentorship and the US Dream Academy, a non-profit organization that connects mentors with children of incarcerated parents.

As the conference came to a close, the event to not be missed was the Chicago and New York delegation party at the Mead Center at Arena stage. The party was packed with the Hills young and up and coming politicos. I look forward to next years Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference, and until then keep visiting ClotureClub.com for more events!

Fall Music Preview 2012

By Tom Wilbur

As summer turns to fall in D.C. a few things tend to change besides the weather. Iced Mochas turn into Pumpkin Spice Lattes, Pool parties turn into afternoons at the bar watching football, and music goes from blasting on porches and out of cars to the more intimate ear-buds.

With this changing of the guard, Cloture Club is here to help you navigate the tricky fall music scene with ten must-listen new albums coming out this fall.

Bob Dylan Tempest

Bob Dylan Tempest (September 11th)—Dylans 35th studio album (!) quickly turns dark as Dylan looks and sees a broken America. Tempest features classic Dylan story telling, including a 14-minute song about the Titanic, including a cameo about Leonardo DiCaprios character from the movie in a twist only Dylan could pull off.

Dave Matthews Band - Away from the World

Dave Matthews Band Away From the World (September 11th)—You don’t have to wear cargo shorts and flip-flops to appreciate both D.M.B.’s staying power and musical prowess. Simply put: These guys make hits.

The Avett Brothers The Carpenter (September 11th)—Expect a louder, darker album as these guys went back to their musical roots, Nirvana and Soundgarden, while making this record.

G.o.o.d Music - Cruel Summer

G.O.O.D. Music Cruel Summer (September 18th)—Say what you want about Kanye West, but the man is a workaholic. Despite touring most of the Spring/Summer with Jay-Z on the massively successful Watch the Throne tour, ‘Ye found time to record a full length with his G.O.O.D. Music crew. Don’t expect a masterpiece, but with all the different sounds and voices you can expect something different from each track.

The Killers Battle Born

The Killers Battle Born (September 18th) Mixing Springsteen-esque lyrics with synthesizer beats, the Killers have been one of the top rock acts in the game for almost a decade now. On their fourth album, the group is starting to perfect their hard edges, finding room to grow as they age.

Band of Horses - Mirage Rock

Band of Horses Mirage Rock (September 18)—One of the original folk rock bands to strike big, Band of Horses find themselves in familiar territory on their newest record—and that’s not a bad thing.

Mumford and Sons - Babel

Mumford and Sons Babel (September 25) Can last years rock surprise story continue on their sophomore album? My guess is that writing great songs is simply in Marcus Mumford’s blood. Expect more radio friendly folk-rock hits.

No Doubt - Push and Shove

No Doubt Push and Shove (September 25th) The bands first album in 11 years features production credits from hot new hit-makers like Diplo. Expect dance ready beats and lots of No Doubt fun that made them popular in the first place.

Good Kid Madd City

Kendrick Lamar Good Kid, m.A.D.D. City (October 22) Lamar is one of the freshest voices in the hip-hop game right now, blending his Compton, CA party style roots with gritty rhymes about growing up in the recession era that listeners can relate to in every city.

A$ap Rocky LongLiveA$ap (October 31) Another rising hip-hop star, A$ap Rocky has blazed his way into the collective hype machine with surprisingly catchy mix-tapes featuring his laid back New York bred voice stretched over syrup soaked southern style beats.

Also coming out this fall: The XX Coexist (9/11), Grizzly Bear Shields (9/18), Green Day Uno! (9/25), Titus Andronicus Local Business (10/23), Big Boi Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors (11/13), Alicia Keys Girl on Fire (11/27)

So no matter what your tastes, this fall should have something for you to listen while you sip that Pumpkin Spice Latte and watch the changing of the colors.

We hope you enjoyed our Fall Music Preview 2012, check out other great articles by Tom Wilbur!

Frankenweenie Review

Tim Burton’s newest release, Frankenweenie, is a stop-motion remake of a thirty-minute film he made all the way back in 1984; the choice to retell it indicating that the story holds special significance for him. In fact, it is autobiographical in the vein of Spielberg’s Super 8, as the protagonist in the story, Victor, is an amateur filmmaker himself, living in a city not unlike the Burbank, California of Burton’s upbringing, he a friendless child with the reputation of being a “nerd” among his less-enlightened peers. We can almost Burton himself getting beat up or made fun of for spending his early years in the attic, toying around with film reels and clay models.

The story centers around Victor’s dog Sparky, to whom he has endless affection, who tragically passes. Victor and his parents bury Sparky in a pet cemetery out of Stephen King’s imagination; afterward, inspired by his macabre science teacher (voiced by Martin Landau), he secretly digs up Sparky one night, brings him home, and attempts to bring him back to life by flying a kite in a thunder storm, sending catalyzed lightning into the dog’s dead body and “sparking” him back to life. The dog wakes, a little worse for the wear (his body parts keep falling off, to comic effect), but still same old Sparky as before.

Later, as the other kids in Victor’s class begin to catch wind of what he’s done, they too want to enliven their deceased animal comrades, but it doesn’t go according to plan; one student brings his turtle back to life, but accidentally drops Miracle-Gro on the animal, and the turtle grows to Godzillan proportions. In another scene, a dead bat and a living cat become fused, the mixture resulting in horrifying black flying feline with fangs. Sparky and Victor are enlisted to save the town from this scourge of horrible creatures.

Frankenweenie Review

This film has all the guilty pleasures of a Burton film: creepiness; a nonchalant treatment of mortality; a fun music score; and really good, genuine characters the audience can rally around. Yet, Burton zaps life himself into this movie and into his now-standard genre of storytelling. More charming than conventional, Burton’s created a movie you can tell he cares about making.

Made by Disney and rendered in 3D, this is aimed at children, though some of the scenes had the children in my theater covering their eyes. Some kids will enjoy it, of course, but be wary about bringing others not accustomed to Burton videos. It’s a fantastic kick-off to the Halloween season, in my opinion.

Guest Post: Perks of Being a Wallflower Review

Recently we sent Taylor, a fan from our facebook page, to a screening of The Perks of Being a Wallflower in DC. Here is her review:

The Perks of Being a Wallflower blew my mind… in an overwhelmingly good way. The indie music obsession, the getting high at parties, the unrequited love and the feelings of teen-angst really pulled me in. Maybe it was because I knew those feelings; I have felt the twinge of being an awkward human at that age. (Who hasn’t?)

I really think the genius of this movie comes from the vulnerability of Charlie, the main character, played by Logan Lerman. Sure, Emma Watson is a babe who shines in a role that isn’t Hermoine, but Lerman is the real star. He opens up to his friends in a way that makes him transcendent of the typical high school hierarchy.

Perks of Being a Wallflower Review

Lerman may get bullied in the movie once or twice, but its not the incessant bullying so many other teen coming of age stories portray. Lerman’s character truly belongs in their “Island of Misfit Toys” friend group that takes him in as one of their own. He plays the socially awkward, mentally unstable kid in such an endearing way that I wanted to take him to a party and introduce him to all my friends. There are moments of sadness in the movie, sure. But there are also moments of victory so big that its worth wading through the sad and complicated emotions to land on the other side of this great film.

Overall this movie is heartbreakingly wonderful and I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. Then again, I am a sucker for troubled youth and indie music.

Thank you Taylor for the great review of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. For those who wish to sign up for future screenings, make sure to follow us on our facebook page, FaceBook.com/ClotureClub!

Member of the Week: Tim Huelskamp

Tim Huelskamp, Congressman representing Kansas’s 1st district

Website | Twitter | Facebook

From the Sunflower state, Timothy Alan Huelskamp was born and raised on his family farm in Fowler, Kansas. Growing up he learned how to raise cattle, corn, wheat, milo and soybeans and he was very active in 4-H and Future Farmers of America.

He went on to attend the College of Sante Fe and received a B.A. in social science in 1991. In 1995 he obtained a PH. D in political science and agriculture policy from American University. While at school in DC, he meet his wife Angela. Soon after graduation, Mr Huelskamp and his wife moved back to Kansas to start a family. They have adopted four children, two of which are from Hati.

Congressman Tim Huelskamp

Tim’s first foray into politics was a successful election to the Kansas Senate. When he was sworn in 1996, he was the youngest Senator elected in Kansas within the past twenty years. Congressman Huelskamp served in the state Senate until 2008, when he decided to run for the House of Representatives. He ran in Kansas’ first district a seat vacated by Rep-Jerry Moran’s, who ran for U.S. Senate. defeated Democrat Alan Jilka by an overwhelming margin of 73% (142,281) to 24% (44,068).

In 2010, 90 new Members joined the House of Representatives. With this huge influx of new Members, Huelskamp joined the Republican Study Committee’s (formerly the Conservative Action Team) Tea Party Caucus.

His main interest while in Congress is the national debt. His past experience as Budget and Legislative Analyst for the state of New Mexico, Mr. Huelskamp has been a pitbull on the Budget committee under Chairman Paul Ryan.

Mr. Huelskamp has traded jabs with the likes of Warren Buffett and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner over this issue. In February Congressman Huelskamp attacked Geithner linking Obama’s administration policies to the financial failure in Greece. Geithner replied the Congressman has an “adolescent perspective on how to think about the economic policy”.

He has no opposition for his 2012 race, so we are assured that Mr. Huelskamp will be around for another Congress to continue his outspokenness. And for that he is our Member of the Week.
