Hey Cloture Club readers, how’s everyone doing with those resolutions? Are you using the extra daylight hours to get a workout in? This week’s post will give you everything you need to know about Epic Yoga, a new-ish Yoga studio in DuPont circle that is definitely worth a try.
Full disclosure, while I love the blissed out feeling after a yoga class, I choose yoga for stretching and toning rather than inner peace or spiritual awakening. I want a yoga teacher to focus on my abs and deltoids, not my third eye or fifth chakra, and the classes at Epic definitely left me sore the next day!
My first experience at Epic was a “hot yoga” class, which is commonly confused with Bikram Yoga but is actually a normal yoga class done in a room heated to roughly 95 degrees. With my best friend in tow, I stretched and sweated for an hour in the Friday evening class. I loved the teacher, the studio space, and the convenient location and decided I had to try another class.
I came back to Epic for my first Yoga Barre class, in which the teacher incorporated ballet positions and moves into traditional flow yoga sequences. It was fun to add something different into the routines I am used to, and the new moves were definitely challenging. However, for those new to yoga or barre classes, it was easy to set your own pace, there were plenty of “breaks” in down dog, and modifications to the more difficult postures were offered.
Epic’s studio is located on Connecticut Avenue just south of Dupont Circle. They have a real locker room with showers, towels, lockers and the necessary products (tampons, hair ties, and they even have eye makeup remover and q-tips in the bathroom for those of us who don’t look hot with sweat-induced mascara streakage) as well as free mat rental. Drop in classes are $18 but they offer first-week and first-month deals as well as packages. The studio has a nice calming ambiance and a “recovery room” with a drinking fountain where you can cool down after class or just sit and chat with friends. The class times are convenient with morning, lunchtime and evening classes. The evening classes start between 5:45 and 8pm, to accommodate different schedules, they also have Friday evening classes which can be hard to find at other gyms and studios!
Overall I would highly recommend Epic to anyone interested in trying a variety of yoga classes.
