Our Review of Jack the Giant Slayer

Jack the Giant Slayer is a unique twist to the fairy tale we all know. Throw in a love story, a few fight scenes, and some humor, and you’ve got a pretty good recipe for a night at the movie.

Newcomers Nicholas Hoult (X-Men) and Eleanor Tomlinson turn in serviceable performances as title character Jack, and his love interest, the princess Isabelle. A large beanstalk bursts out of the ground, which leads to a a towering stone cliff in the clouds where a tribe of giants has taken the princess prisoner. Who will save her? You guessed it.

Veterans Ewan McGregor and Stanley Tucci, as the unflappable Captain of the Guard Elmont, and comically villainous groom-to-be Roderick respectively, brought the necessary balance to offer something for the young and old. It’s actually refreshing to not have to deal with the shades of grey, for once in a movie. Rounding out the ensemble cast was the distinctive voice of Bill Nighy as Fallon, the “dominant head” of the two-headed leader of the giants.

Though I won’t give away the ending, I did find it to be a bit predictable. But let’s not forget its origin. We’re supposed to know good wins over evil but the movie never detracted from the enjoyment in the slightest.

The movie was evenly spaced with action and comedy, but not forced. The movie clocks in at less than 2 hours, but I never once found myself impatient as more recent films have me doing lately. It actually was entertaining which speaks volumes on its production and direction. The movie was screened in 3D. While it was enjoyable, it’s not worth shelling out the extra dough. Nothing popped out of the screen enough for me to feel the need for it.
