Review of Nature Box Snacks

One of the keys to eating healthy is to plan ahead and always have snacks on hand for times when back to back meetings or an impending deadline messes with mealtimes. Finding convenient, healthy food in order to avoid the junk (such as neon-orange vending machine fare or 600 calorie muffins from the coffee shops that beckon when I’m famished!) is a high priority for me and I am always on the hunt for new options. So I was intrigued when I saw several options of “subscription-style” boxes of healthy snack foods that could be ordered online (ladies, think Birchbox, but for snacks). When I saw a discount code for Nature Box, I decided I would try it and write a review for Cloture Club readers.

Nature Box Snack

The boxes cost $20 each and contain 5 different snacks. Unfortunately, I wasn’t thrilled with the selection I got, because they were neither a bargain, nor all that healthy. The snacks were corn crackers, mixed nuts, dried fruit, a granola and puffed rice clusters. While the snacks were tasty and certainly less processed than anything I could find in a vending machine, there was added sugar and soybean oil in almost everything! Even the dried fruit mix, which should be plenty sweet, had sugar and oil in the ingredients. Furthermore, the snacks were fairly expensive, breaking down to $4 for a medium size bag of 3-6 small servings of each.

A caveat: we’re pretty spoiled in the DC area with easy access to Trader Joes and Whole Foods; for those without easy access to affordable health food stores, Nature Box could be a great alternative. However, I could easily get equivalent snack foods for half the price by buying Trader Joes’ brand options or shopping in the bulk bins of Whole Foods.

For those of you who don’t want to battle the crowds and lines at Whole Foods after work, other online options I use from time to time to purchase healthy food at discount prices are Mountain Rose Herbs, Vitacost, and Amazon’s Natural and Organic site. Sign up for their mailing lists and you can get free shipping codes and coupons for further savings. I also love making my own granola mixes from Element Bars (which used to be Me & Goji) and, if you can get out to the Maryland suburbs for pickup days, the Norman’s Farm Market CSA is awesome and a bargain compared to the farmers markets in the city!

So unfortunately I will be discontinuing my subscription of Nature Box and trekking to the grocery store and farmers market once more for my healthy snacks…do readers have any other snack boxes or online food shopping resources they would recommend?
