Southern Hospitality at Taste of the South

The 31st Annual Taste of the South raised nearly half a million dollars for the Mercy House on Saturday night. The sold out black tie event stayed true to its theme and was indeed a “Roaring Southern Night” as the DAR Constitution Hall erupted with Southern pride. Guests dined on traditional snacks, bid at the silent auction, and danced the night away with music by Coast to Coast.

Thirteen Southern states were represented, each with their own themed booth. Texas’ “Friday Night Lights” served Rib eyes courtesy of Texas Tech. Alabama featured the “Greatest Show on Earth” with a circus theme and their very own tiger statue and Sister Schubert’s rolls. Louisiana even served up fried alligator for a real “Taste of the Bayou.”

Lines grew as news of the best grub spread through the crowd. Bojangles Chicken and Biscuits was a favorite and worth the wait. Georgia’s “Southern Snapshot” caused a few lines as well, but not so much for the food, more for the fun, photo booth sponsored by Cloture Club, that automatically uploaded pictures to Twitter and Facebook. Check them out here!

In the VIP lounge, A. Smith Bowman passed out tasty 7-year and 10-year bourbon samples while Missouri’s Congressman Billy Long, showed off his auctioneering skills.

The Taste of the South is not only a must for transplanted Southerners in DC, but for the rest of the city as well, as the event continues to grow each year. Great cause, delicious food, fashionable young professionals and Southern hospitality at its finest, TOTS is a win!
