Maddy’s Tap Room is located at 13th and L Street, not far from Logan Circle. My friend and I decided to head here for happy hour a couple weeks ago to try out one of the city’s new beer spots.
Atmosphere and Service:
This is the sister restaurant of Maddy’s Bar & Grille in Dupont, and if you’re familiar with both, the family resemblance is striking in terms of interior décor. Upon arriving my friend and I were greeted promptly and cordially by a hostess, but we decided to check and see if there was a seat at the bar in order to get a better look at the beer selection and tap setup. No such luck. For a place with “Tap Room” in its name, Maddy’s doesn’t have much in the way of bar seating. We returned to the hostess stand to inquire about a seat in the restaurant, and while the place was in no way crowded at 6:30pm, we were led to a table situated right next to the kitchen and the line where the wait staff picks up completed orders. We asked the server who was assisting us if we could opt instead for a booth by the window, since the place was virtually empty. The way she rolled her eyes at us, you’d have thought we’d just asked her to return to the back of the line at the DMV. A bit of a turn off, but hey, everyone has bad days right?
Glancing around, it’s not readily apparent what little sister is going for in terms of décor. Call it a mix of country, southwest, modern, wanna be sports bar with multi colored Christmas lights. Overall it was comfortable, albeit a little fabricated and odd feeling.
Beer Selection:
Maddy’s serves 40 beers on tap and a slightly smaller bottle and can selection. While there are some craft beers available, there isn’t really anything too obscure or exciting aside from a few local DC beers. The draft and bottle menus are organized by beer style, but that’s about as much imagination that was put into them. Honestly, I’ve seen a wider range of craft beer choices at some of the convenience stores in my neighborhood.
Value:
In terms of price, Maddy’s is very reasonable when it comes to beer. The food however, was a different story entirely. We had the intention when we came to Maddy’s to sample a few of the appetizers that we’d heard good things about from internet reviews, then move on to dinner. Wow, were we disappointed. Everything we ate was overpriced in terms of quality. As far as Tex-Mex goes, I’ve received better value and better food at a chain restaurant that “thinks outside the bun.” Needless to say, after 4 failed appetizers in a row, we didn’t stick around for dinner.
Overall: It’s said that if you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all. I made a promise to DC when I first started writing this column however, and I’ve got to stick by it. I hate to give a place a bad review, but Maddy’s Tap Room is mediocre at best. The draft menu was just ok, the atmosphere was odd, and the servers seemed to know absolutely nothing about beer. I’d like to say that Maddy’s might be a great spot if they can work the kinks out, but I don’t see it happening with so many things going against it. I won’t be returning, and I wouldn’t recommend it.
Until next time, stay thirsty DC!
